OPEN STUDIOS

Image
Open Studios was one of the best days of my life. It was completely exhausting but exhilarating non the less. I didn't think any of it was going to happen, it felt like so much work but we pulled it off. I sold lot's of small prints and someone even bought a the  Barber Shop at Night  picture which was a huge win. Being apart of this event was a perfect way to wrap up this year and funny enough was the first time I ever really finished a spring semester (first year covid, second year online, third year strike.)  I now know I think I'd love to show my work more, it was the best feeling receiving so many compliments from so many talented people. I loved the social aspect of the day and just socializing and making connections with like minded issues gave me a massive sense of purpose.  I was in genuine shock when I was called for the David Lanier memorial award. It was a great honour to receive this an certainly will help me a lot in my photography journey to keep progr...

A Normal Family Portrait: Final Project

Image
Description: This is my final project for Senior Studio I. This project took lots of planning and coordination to achieve the look that I wanted. Taking inspiration from Gregory Crewdson and Jeff wall I combined 10 images to create my final product. I wanted to make a photograph that represented triangular relationship structures in the family unit. This was the final composition that a decides on and felt it represented the emotions I wanted to viewer to feel. In my practice recently I am looking to give a little less information to the viewers to allow contemplation and curiosity rather then giving everything to them. I believe this photograph can illicit many different explanations and that is rewarding to me. This photo is heavily inspired by the theme and time period of Death of a Salesmen, which has a huge impact on my life the first time I read it.  The Process:  I open all of these photos in Lightroom classic then click open in layers in photoshop. This then all...

Final assignment preparation

Image
For my final assignment I want to analyze triangular relationships between the father figure, a mother, and a son. Specifically how the father’s actions can cause ripples that effect through how the son may treat the mother and how the mother may treat the son. This was an interesting realization I had whilst watching death of a salesman and my goal in this project is to have the theatrical of the play bleed through into my photographs. Kacie seen in the photos is going to be an actor in the final and this was a test. Kacie was in clown makeup as she does that often in her work and we wanted to try it. I brought my set items to practice as well and see how they make look and I very pleased with the results. I am trying to get the Gregory Crewdson look mixed in with my own personal ideas and aesthetic style.

Artist Statement Revision #1

My photographs are meant to tell a story, to connect with the viewer, and to accentuate the things I find beautiful of my subjects. Conceptually, I am critical of societal standards, specifically those norms or stereotypes focused on men, and how patriarchy, and notions of masculinity have negatively effected society. My work explores and reimagines representation of masculine value, and invites the viewer to reflect on their own personal experiences.  I aim my lens at domestic suburban experience to see how and to show how communities are formed by entrenched conventions and behaviours. Analyzing the environments at which I inhabit I look for signs of life, and subjects that have masculine connotations tied to them; wether that be the direct representation of man and traditional masculine values or subjects that represent the results of following traditional masculine values. Masculinity is revealed in everyday life in many forms reinforced by stereotypes and pre conceived n...

One of my favourite publications for references and looking at what contemporary photography and art is looking like.

Nan Goldin

Image
Recently I have been interested in photography that carries elements of painting and seriously considers lighting. Mainly referencing Painters like Edward Hopper and Alex Coville I began my search looking for Photographers. One of the unique ones I found was Nan Goldin. I really like her approach to photography that invites the viewer into intimate moments the she is experiencing. Though the moments are not staged she has a way of taking these photos that elevate them to the level of high art by mimicking painting composition.  Nan Goldin Gina at Bruce’s dinner party, NYC , 1991
