Project Proposal
Senior Studio I
Art 4048
David Miller
Artist: Kort Woycheshin
Intent: My goal is to gain a better understanding of what ‘art’ photography is and what goes into it. I want to generate a body of work that represents my ideas/thoughts artistically and better develop my identity as a photographer/an artist who uses photography.
Methods, Materials and Tools: Throughout this semester I hope to use a variety of cameras and formats ranging from digital mirrorless, 35mm, 120mm and 4x5” sheet film. I want to develop a thorough understanding of dark room processes and transition from the intermediate print maker to advanced and beyond. Using things like, dodging, burning, pre-flashing prints and more to create depth carefully crafted prints. I want to explore more portraiture during my time in studio as well as street photography. I aim to generate the themes I am passionate about and have them come through in my photographs.
Subject/Theme: I want to continue to explore and develop ideas about masculinity, depression, anxiety, love, the human experience, capitalism etc. I genuinely believe the interconnectedness between these themes, specifically how masculinity modulates these themes is a never-ending project I wish to pursue.
Questions I want to ask?
• How is isolation promoted in society and why do men in particularly not talk?
• What are signs of struggle in men? Why do we choose to ignore them?
• How does men’s mental health burden society due to the lack of acknowledgement, acceptance, etc.
• Who are key historical figures that struggled with mental health that would be interesting to discuss?
• What is the relationship between capitalism and men’s mental health/masculinity?
• How do struggling men love the women in their lives? What does healthy masculinity look like when prompted with healthy love?
• Where do men learn about love?
• What is attractive about loneliness?
• What is the relation between melancholic solitude and masculinity?
Schedule:
I aim to spend majority of in class time researching, sketching, conceptualizing potential shoots, and potentially developing in the darkroom. Majority of my shoots an idea will happen outside of studio time.
By January 25th: I would like to have 5-10 prints ready some digital some made in the dark room exploring these themes. This first critique will be treated as a mini exhibition introducing the class to the themes and concepts I wish to pursue.
March 1st: I’d like to make a wall sized photomontage print those deals with content inspired by Death of a Salesmen. By March 1st I’d like to show all the photos/prints that are to make up this photomontage print.
March 29th: Display my final wall sized print that deals with this subject matter.
